In the mid 1920s the Long Beach Press-Telegram regularly ran a feature called News from neighboring Communities which featured articles submitted by readers in various surrounding communities. They seem to have usually been submitted by someone affiliated with local realtors who were trying to increase awareness of the homes and appeals of their communities. Some communities, like Lomita, Bellflower and even Seal Beach had articles run almost daily. Los Alamitos would have perhaps one article a week. Two would be a rarity.
LOS ALAMITOS, Sept. 15—Richard Longeval and two sons, Edward and Joseph, left early in the week for their ranch near Sacramento. The remainder of the family expects to join them later.
Laurel School opened Wednesday. Mrs. Ethel Wescott principal, teaching the sixth, seventh and eight grades; Mrs. Olive Jinks, third, fourth and fifth grades; Mrs. Lettie Kerr, second grade, and Miss Lucille Barry, first grade.
Mrs. W.E. Loranger was in Los Angeles Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. George Martin and Elizabeth joined a party of hometown friends in a picnic at Brookside Park, Pasadena, Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Coudra were in Garden Grove Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gilchrist of Sunset Beach visited at the George Martin home the first of the week.
A Defense Day program was given at Laurel School on Friday evening and was enjoyed by a fair-sized audience. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. F.L. Norton, President of the Women’s Improvement Club, and the following program presented: “America,” the audience; piano solo, Mrs. Felix Morris; whistling solo, Billy Bedwell; piano solo, Marian Watts; piano solo, Doris Campbell; piano solo, Mrs. Felix Morris; address, Hugh T. O’Connor; “Star Spangled Banner,” audience.
Almost two weeks went by before the next Los Alamitos article.
LOS ALAMITOS, Sept. 26—Mr. and Mrs. Robert Merchant of Bellflower were guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Loranger recently.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Branne and daughter Jane Evelyn of Inglewood spent Sunday at the George Martin home.
Mrs. George Watts entertained on Monday Mrs. Hattie Van Arsdale of Kansas and Mrs. Charles Gill and Mrs. Wilbur Gill of Artesia.
Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Arnold of Bellflower were calling on Los Alamitos friends on Sunday.
The cottage on Chestnut Street belonging to W.B. Poe has been completed and is being occupied by the Orth family.
Mrs. F.E. Norton is entertaining her mother, Mrs. Elam. The Elam family is moving from near Cypress to a ranch near San Bernardino.
The Laurel School has an unusually large attendance this year due to the number of families in the new tract opened south of town. It may be necessary to employ another teacher and use the auditorium as a classroom.
Bedford Hammer and family are occupying the rear apartment of the George Watts building. Mr. Hammer until recently has been employed by the San Joquin Fruit and Produce Company near Santa Ana. He will work here at the garage at the corner of Florista Street and the boulevard.
Mrs. George Martin spent Thursday in Long Beach.
